Outside the Law by French-Algerian director Rachid Bouchareb, is nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards officially representing Algeria.  It is a slick and controversial gangster film, set in the backdrop of the Algerian independence movement.  Entertaining and well acted but ultimately a fluff film with poorly developed characters, and a rather formulaic story-line that plays loose with historical details.

Looks interesting. I kinda forgot about this after Cannes but the Oscar nomination definitely piqued my interest. There was a film submitted to a previous year's Oscars called White Wedding, and I just saw it a couple days ago. I though it was fantastic, and it's a shame it didn't make it to the nominee short-list. It's set up like a light romantic comedy, but there's a lot of depth to it. It's the kind of film that's not afraid to approach topics like racial tensions, while still remaining upbeat and optimistic. The trailer's at http://www.whiteweddingmovie.com and I recommend giving it a watch.

I read about the Algerian independence movement and it's a little-known yet devastating thing in France's history. Especially for Algerian women :/
