Somewhere by writer/director Sofia Coppola, won the Golden Lion for Best Picture at the 2010 Venice International Film Festival.  I was really looking forward to seeing this since I really enjoyed all of her previous work.  It is a minimalistic film filled with techniques that I usually appreciate, such as long still takes, visually stylish cinematography, a great minimal score, good acting chemistry, realistic dialogue, and even identical twin strippers.

Even with all those things, I couldn't help but feel while watching it that there was something holding back this film from being really great.  That missing piece is a unique and compelling story.  Somewhere is now the third film of hers in a row to tell us about the lives of bored rich celebrities, after the stylish Marie Antoinette and masterful Lost in Translation.

I still believe that Miss Coppola is no doubt one of the best American directorial talents working today.  Maybe it's time for her to branch out and tell us a different story, or collaborate with some other writers.  I guess what I'm trying to say is in the future I'm hoping to see more Lux and less Marie.

I thought Lost in Translation was good, Marie Antoinette was flat but pretty, and now this...I wish she'd grow out of her little niche already. Rich people constantly making movies about rich people problems just grates on my nerves.

definitely sounds like a film i'd enjoy, although i hope they focus more on the pills, girls, and cars than the daughter haha
