I Stand Alone / Seul contre tous (1998)
Director: Gaspar Noé
Starring: Philippe Nahon, Blandine Lenoir, Frankye Pain
The continued story of the Butcher from Carne. The Butcher has done some time in jail for assaulting the man who tried to seduce his daughter. Now free, he wants to start a new life. Lured by the promise of a new butcher shop, he abandons his daughter in an institution and moves to the suburbs with his mistress. Thus begins his downward spiral fueled by frustration and desperation.
I Stand Alone, Gaspar Noé's first full length film, is an incredibly detailed and unflinching glimpse into the mind of a deranged individual. The tension builds as we watch the Butcher sink deeper and deeper into his desperate situation. Light on actual dialogue, the film is narrated by the Butcher's internal monologue, capturing the emotion in every brutal and depressing thought.
