Literature professor Jon prepares to wed onetime student Thora, the daughter of the region's most prosperous clan. Sadly, however, disadvantageous circumstances threaten to stand in the way of the couple's happiness, including a fiscal dispute between the family of the bride and the family of the bridegroom, and by Jon's complicated past.
White Night Wedding is the 5th film directed by Baltasar Kormákur (101 Reykjavik) and was Iceland's official submission to the 2009 Academy Awards. It is a drama set on the small island of Flatey off the coast of Northern Iceland, during the summer solstice where it is daylight for 24 hours.Kormákur has made some fine movies, but unfortunately this isn't one of them. While the setting is incredibly picturesque and there are some very funny moments, the narrative is too choppy with the overuse of flashbacks, and it seems he couldn't decide whether to make a serious drama or a whimsical comedy. So everything is thrown together resulting in a jumbled mess.
