L'argent (Money) is the thirteenth and last film directed by Robert Bresson, for which he was awarded the inaugural Best Director Prize at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival, an award he shared with Andrei Tarkovsky for Nostalghia.  It is a drama set in contemporary France, based on the novella The Forged Coupon by Leo Tolstoy, that depicts the trail of suffering spread from the passing of one counterfeit note.

A powerful essay on the corrupting aspects of money, L'argent shows the gradual transformation of Yvon, who through circumstances beyond his control, is turned from a hardworking and honest family man into a cold and calculated criminal.  A journey that ends with an unforgettable, violent and brutal conclusion.

Overall an excellent thought provoking story, a fine example of pure minimalist cinema, and a fitting swan song for Bresson, who ironically was forced to retire after this because he could not get the funding for his next planned project.
