The Vanishing by George Sluizer is a film based on a Dutch novella by Tim Krabbe.  It is a very well made thriller, unique in that it has essentially no violence or gore, and also reveals the killer very early in the film, yet manages to be deeply disturbing and highly suspenseful.  I highly recommend this film, but avoid reading too much about it and see only the Dutch/French original, not the 1993 Hollywood remake of the same name.

Excellent film, saw this a few years ago and it's stayed with me. Sets a high standard for European thrillers; like you say, without showing any violence or gore, it is still so powerful.
