The Life of Jesus by Bruno Dumont (Hadewijch) is his first feature film, and was awarded the Camera D’Or Mention at the 1997 Cannes Film festival.  It is an interesting raw social drama depicting the lives of bored and aimless teenagers in the north of France.

Dumont has a talent for composing fascinating contrasts, a scene with characters hanging around in listless boredom can be poetic and amazingly expressive, while another scene of un-simulated sex filmed with close-ups, comes across as routine and lifeless.

All in all, a solid first effort from one of my favorite directors working today.

Sounds intense. I don't think I want to watch anything with such a serious tone at this time...
