Noroît is a film directed by Jacques Rivette.  It is the second part of his unfinished four-film series depicting celestial goddesses and their battles on Earth.  The first film being Duelle (une quarantaine).  After completing work on Noroît in 1976, Rivette suffered a breakdown while shooting the third film, a love story titled Histoire de Marie et Julien, so the series was shelved indefinitely.  He would eventually complete Histoire de Marie et Julien in 2003 as a ghost story.

With Noroît, Rivette takes his stab at a swashbuckling pirate adventure.  Much darker fare than any of his previous work, this also features the best scenery and location out of any of his films, set around a twelfth century fortress on the coast of Brittany.  Once again all the music is improvised, this time entirely onscreen by a trio of musicians.
