Tuesday, After Christmas from Romanian director Radu Muntean (Boogie, The Paper Will Be Blue), premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.  Filmed in the signature minimalist style of the Romanian New Wave, this film marks a shift in subject matter from the previous films, most of which dealt with social or political commentary, whereas this film tells an universal story.  A tale of adultery that could take place anywhere and with anyone.

All three of the actors in this triangle do a wonderful job here.  Mimi Brănescu as Paul, the banker husband torn between two loves, Mirela Oprisor as Adriana, the oblivious lawyer wife, and Maria Popistaşu as Raluca, the other woman who also happens to be the daughter's dentist.  One scene in particular stands out as perhaps one of the best scenes in any film this year:  A brilliantly acted, honest and emotional uninterrupted 11 minute long take of the couple in their apartment after Paul confesses to being in love with someone else.

With Tuesday, After Christmas, Muntean proves once again that Romanian cinema is unmatched in its ability to portray a tiny slice of life with such delicate realism.

drama films aren't generally my forte, but this seems like a unique concept for a movie. I will certainly look into watching it, thanks for bringing it to my attention. :)
