Lourdes from Austrian director Jessica Hausner premiered at the 2009 Venice Film Festival winning several awards.  It is a unique and interesting take on what goes on at the popular holy pilgrimage site.  A site that that could be best described as a sacred amusement park lined with souvenir shops and long queues at every attraction.  Most impressive is how Hausner manages to stay neutral and tell this highly religious story without coming across as either for or against Catholicism.  Also, Sylvie Testud is simply incredible in the starring role as paralyzed and wheelchair bound Christine, for which she recently won Best Actress at the 2010 European Film Awards.

I like the premise. And once again, I'm apparently a sucker for poster art. Add this to my list of movies I'd see based just on the poster.

This was on BBC Four recently.

I was a fan of Sylvie Testud after seeing her performance in Fear and Loathing but this one convinced me that she is a genuinely brilliant talent. Her performance coupled with Hausner's neutral direction had me gripped and questioing events - does Christine deserve her "miracle". Is it even real? I also fell in love with Lea Seydoux.

Glad you enjoyed this. I'm a huge Sylvie Testud fan as well. She's actually just finished directing her first film and I'm looking forward to seeing how that turns out.
