Next Door is a Norwegian film directed by Pål Sletaune.  It is a hauntingly effective psychological thriller with a dark and dreamlike mood, a disturbed protagonist, and highly violent and erotic content that earned the film a rare over 18 rating in Norway.

Set almost entirely within the walls of two adjoining apartments, and filled with a creepy surreal atmosphere a la David Lynch, the film takes us on a twisted journey with the main character John, played magnificently by Kristoffer Joner.  Both the cinematography and the pacing combine perfectly to put the viewer constantly on edge with suspense and an ever present sense of claustrophobia.

This is one of those films that is best seen knowing as little as possible about the story.  I'll just say that you should probably choose something other than this to watch with your mom on Mother's Day.

The poster is really creepy, and the plot sounds even creepier. I don't know why the atmosphere reminds me of Martyrs, but it does. Have you seen Martyrs btw?

I have, and I don't really see any similarity, also this one is nowhere near as graphically brutal or emotionally powerful as Martyrs.
