Professor Hannibal (1956)

Professor Hannibal / Hannibál tanár úr (1956)

Genre: Drama
Director: Zoltán Fábri
Starring: Erno Szabo, Noemi Apor, Emmi Buttykay, Ferenc Bessenyei, Zoltan Greguss
Duration: 88 min.
Rating: 6.3

Summary:
This is the highly symbolic story of an insignificant school teacher who becomes a momentary hero after rescuing a stuffed peacock from a fire.

Professor Hannibal is a 1956 Hungarian film directed by Zoltán Fábri. In 2000, it was chosen by critics as one of the Budapest 12, as one of the 12 best Hungarian films of the 20th Century.

The film is set during the 1930's a time when Hungary was under the fascist rule of Admiral Miklós Horthy.  The story follows Professor Nyul which translates to Rabbit, a meek and insignificant high school Latin teacher whose nickname Professor Hannibal comes from his obsession with the legend of the great general of Carthage.  Through a strange sequence of events, Nyul is thrust into the public spotlight as a hero, but things quickly get uncontrollably out of hand and he is soon seen as a threat by the political powers that be.

This one didn't resonate very strongly with me, perhaps from not being all too familiar with that era, or maybe losing much of the cultural nuance in the translation.  Still it was an interesting watch, had a well crafted story, and some great acting from Erno Szabo as the Professor.

Passing on this one. It doesn't sound all that interesting and if you felt like it was a chore it would probably be worse on me.

I would have a chart explaining my scoring rationale.  But honestly I don't have a system.  I just go with a gut feeling and any film that I can stand to finish watching in one sitting gets at least a 5.0

I'm not very swayed. It sounds simple. Sometimes that's a good thing but in this case eh? I dunno.

Also, I think dismyname just wants to know how you base your scores.

Hi Bonjour,

Hope this is a good spot to chat. The first URL of the blog I originally started is candacearoche.blogspot.com. You will see how the footer is in that one. The second blog to fix the first one is candylandpro.blogspot.com and the footer did the same exact thing until I decided to post something to see what would happen. That doesn't look any better either. How did you get hooked on film? Thanks for all your help.  C

This film just didn't do much for me and almost felt like a chore watching it.  Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind at the time... what rating do you think it deserves?
