Today is the big day! Festival de Cannesthe most important festival of the year commences with the Opening Ceremony, hosted by the lovely and talented Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds), who just last week released her first album titled En t'attendant, produced with the help of Irish songwriter Damien Rice.
During the ceremony, 71 year-old Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci (Last Tango in Paris, The Last Emperor) will be presented with the inaugural Honorary Palme d'Or award in recognition of his distinguished film making career. The ceremony will be followed by the screening of this year's opening film, Midnight in Paris directed by Woody Allen.

Midnight in Paris, opening film of the 64th Cannes Film Festival
I admit I'm not a big fan of Woody Allen or Owen Wilson for that matter, but this trailer and the rest of the cast have got me intrigued. Also, you'd think it must be at least half way decent if the programmers selected it for the opening film. It will be interesting to hear the audience's reaction to it.

Damien Rice's influence is evident on the title track from Laurent's album, 'Waiting for you'. It's a well produced arrangement, but I'm afraid she's a much better actress than singer. What do you think?

I too have never been a fan of Woody Allen. I'm glad to know there is another like me!
Would love to be there but no love for Woody anymore.
Midnight In Paris looks pretty bad, Owen Wilson is really annoying and I think Woody has just lost it really. ..
Maybe if he slowed down a bit and made a different kind of film for a change, I might be interested but I'm not exited about this one.
Shame, he used to be one of the best.
