Certified Copy is a French production filmed in the Tuscany region of Italy by Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami. It premiered at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, where Juliette Binoche was awarded the Best Actress Award for her performance.
It is a very cleverly layered film, that plays with the concept of copies and originals in many different ways. Kiarostami is a very skilled director and it shows in the way he frames every shot, every movement and placement of the camera has a purpose. There are many scenes where the action is intentionally placed behind glass, or seen only as a reflection, or as a 'copy'.
The way the story unfolds is very unexpected and really makes you think about the relationship presented. As we get to know the characters we soon find out everything is not what it seems, or is it?
The acting was superb, Shimell an UK opera singer in his first acting role holds his own opposite the wonderful Binoche. Fully deserving of her Cannes Best Actress Award, she puts on an absolutely incredible acting clinic, deftly weaving multiple emotions in three languages. The role required her to speak in Italian, English, and her native French.
All in all, a very fine first European film from Kiarostami.

Always been a fan of Juliette Binoche, nice trailer to what looks like a good movie..
I wasn't convinces of Shimell, but Binoche... just wonderful. Now it's not really my type of movie. I have to be in a certain mood for these kind of films :)
